Yeah that'll stir the pot. But that's a good way to find out stuff. I think you're basically right. I think the origins of Islam are leaving something huge out - specifically, I think those "desert fathers" in orthodoxy were participants in the period of iconoclasm, which was in the general time period when Islam started, and those desert hermits that rejected the icons did so with such fervor that they banned all images of people in art in the new religion they helped found. And I mostly agree with them and their reasons, although I think art serves a function in that it can help us confront our shadow in the Jungian sense.
