At MIT’s 2025 commencement on May 29, Class President Megha Vemuri condemned the university’s ties to Israel’s military and defense industry, calling it “a shame that MIT is a part of it.”
As the ceremony ended, graduates raised a Palestinian flag and chanted, “Free, Free Palestine!”
Student organizers have escalated pressure on MIT to sever ties with Israel’s arms industry. Earlier this year, they scored a major victory as MIT ended its partnership with Elbit Systems, Israel’s largest weapons manufacturer. Elbit drones and surveillance systems have been widely used in Israel’s genocide against the Palestinian people in Gaza.
MIT President Sally Kornbluth, who spoke immediately after Vemuri, did not address her remarks. Kornbluth had last year been called before Congress to testify about “antisemitism” on campus.
