Let's celebrate the birthday of Rev. John Michell, born OTD in 1724, a pioneering scientist very few of us have heard of.
Among his many discoveries is his idea of stellar "black holes."
Based on Newton’s Corpuscular theory of light, Michell calculated that the escape velocity for a star with more than 500 times the mass of the Sun would exceed the speed of light. Light cannot escape from such a body, which would therefore be invisible.
