All I can do is quote Raymond Chandler: "when in doubt, have a man come through the door with a gun."
(Feel free to substitute "secondary character" for "man", "dramatic device" for "gun", and maybe "enter the scene" for "come through the door"—any way you cut it, the advice is still sound.)
