Find a different server, check it out, if you like it, set up a Plan B account, use export/import to copy over the people you follow, and encourage your followers to follow you there as well. You don't have to actively use it, but it is there....

So when things go cactus, you can use the plan B account - or even do a reverse export/import to refollow people you have lost through the mis-step of admin. (I use mine in the rare times my instance is down for any reason, plus as a backup for any catastrophe.)

Mind you, re recent events, if you regularly export the people you follow, you could have imported the list to your primary account to recover lost people.
