What I did was buy a Mac Mini and have it set to back up my iCloud photos to an ext drive (the same Mac mirrors Dropbox.) \n\nBarring 2nd Mac, you might be able to create a 2nd user account on your Mac and have its Photos library on an ext disk. The mirroring works independently: main account optimizes, 2nd account mirrors to ext disk. TBD is if you always need to be logged into the 2nd account.",
