Just going to lean in and say it: outside of real concerns with public transit around one's safety in more dense cities that don't provide adequate services for people, most folks who have options avoid buses and public transit because they don't want to be seen as poor.

In my time understanding class consciousness and how it manifests in everyday behavior, it plays out each time. I'm able to find folks who benefit more from community engagement on public transit. Whereas, especially where I'm based in Florida, folks avoid it nor even acknowledge its existence. That allows for the degradation or eventual dismantling of the service (since it comes at no harm to even working folks for whom having more predictable bus services would benefit in reducing their gas and maintenance costs).
