I started out on a smallish instance that got shut down, luckily they did announce it, so now I'm on one of the big sorta official ones (mastodon.online), according to word it may not be the best choice for everyone but since I mostly use my curated feed and rarely check local/federated it's not a problem for me.
I know a few from my old server went to sunny.garden though
