Fun fact: Kaplan, a common surname among Ashkenazi Jews, usually indicated descent from the priestly lineage. In the Russian empire, male Jews other than priests were required to join the army for 25 years, and many changed their surnames to Kaplan in hope of gaining exemption from military service.
