I don't know what a ruffle shuffle is, but it's when you bend the corners and let one corner of one card down then another and so on until the deck is shuffled, then you just make the deck whole again.
Although your proposed method would work easier I suppose. Pain in the ass to get the "decks" back in one piece tho.
