Now is an excellent time to remember that the only way a sovereign nation state can default on government debt instruments denominated in a currency that it has the sole power to mint, is if its political system is so degenerate and suicidally stupid that defaulting on the government debt is a plausible scenario for how events could unfold.
There is no plausible scenario where the U.S. government is forced into default on treasury debt by circumstances outside its control. If the government defaults then it will be entirely because the political choice to do so somehow comes to be made by the President, his entire cabinet and the leadership of both houses of Congress.
Downgrading the US treasury is a serious declaration that you think this is completely within the boundaries of possibility.
