US to soften tailpipe emissions, slow EV transition through 2030
==========
The Biden administration plans to ease proposed yearly requirements through 2030 to cut tailpipe emissions and increase electric vehicle (EV) sales. Automakers and the United Auto Workers have urged the administration to slow the ramp-up in EV sales, citing high costs and the need for more charging infrastructure. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) had proposed a 56% reduction in new vehicle emissions by 2032, with automakers aiming for EVs to constitute 60% of new vehicle production by 2030. However, the revised final regulation is expected to slow the pace of emissions requirements, resulting in EVs accounting for less than 60% of total vehicles produced by 2030. The Alliance for Automotive Innovation, representing major automakers, has called for requirements of 40 to 50% EVs by 2030. The EPA's proposal is still under review, and the agency plans to finalize a rule that achieves reductions in air and climate pollution while ensuring economic benefits.
