Most vehicle combat scenarios are designed to fight like for like. Tank warfare is silly unless your opposition has tanks. May as well just toss artillery indefinitely unless you need to fight tanks with your tanks. Modern fighter jets can intercept any jet but are mostly wasted against anything but other modern fighters. Even the century series of the early cold war could intercept a jetliner made today. Battleships became obsolete long before WWII and most navies didn't figure it out until the war was well underway, as carrier operationsmade it impossible to line up capital ships and lob shells back and forth.
