#onthisday in 1807 the great French physicist and mathematician Joseph Fourier's "Mémoire sur la propagation de la chaleur dans les corps solides" (Treatise on the propagation of heat in solid bodies) [1] was read to the Paris Institute. This important mathematical work contained many important results, including what we today call the Fourier Series [2].

Interestingly, a committee consisting of Lagrange, Laplace, Monge and Lacroix was set up to report on Fourier's work. Although highly regarded these days, apparently at the time Fourier's memoir caused a great deal of controversy. In particular, both Lagrange and Laplace objected to Fourier's expansions of functions as trigonometrical series (the Fourier series), and it was not until 1822 that his prize winning essay "Théorie analytique de la chaleur" (Analytical theory of heat) was published by the Académie des Sciences [3].
