Chinese: traditionally the Zhou dynasty onward referred to themselves as the "Middle Kingdom" (中國) because they believed they were the center of the world- to refer to a cardinal direction generally means that one is referring derisively to a "not-Chinese" place. Hence why I rendered "southern" as "foreign."
