Have you tried ardour? It is one of the best DAW's I've worked with. If you're running linux it's in the repos. On mac or win you'll have to compile it yourself or give a donation ($1 will work) for a ready made installer.
Sorry for the sideline. I tried audacity a few times and did not like it.
Just an opinion though, do with it what you will, Godspeed.
