npub1zdp33shl69xr0uq3x8n5gsjykq9upycwh6nqm02c3f6x0frrn0dq42vqv8 (npub1zdp…vqv8) no, although it's definitely broader than just headphones
i think a lot of it really is other brands following apple's heavily dieter rams inspired style cues, both for the luxe halo and because modern manufacturing often handles complexity of form a lot cheaper than complexity of decoration
i'm not really against it, both because functionalism is not without some appeal for me also (me with my midcentury modern ass living room, lol) and because my own options for decoration are less constrained with objects that express little opinion of their own in that regard
today i might put eurostile lettering on my headphones so they look like something out of a ridley scott film, and next year instead favor a winding vine motif; with their near total lack of native ornament, my sennheisers will wear the one as comfortably as the other
and then too there's the other thing i don't love about OEM ornament: that's BOM and process cost going to a purpose other than excelling in essential function, usually resulting in either a higher price or subpar performance compared to a design without frivolity, and sometimes both at once. it matters to me that my headphones not lie to my ears; if they're not pretty out of the box that's fine, because when the spirit moves me i will see that they become so
