I think I get your point, if you're meaning that many people who read that quote will assume it is referring to people like them who have debts that hold them back, as that's not actual slavery.
However, many people in real slavery nowadays are bonded laborers who are trapped working to pay off debts that they can never repay due to the high interest rates applied and the minimal rate at which their work is valued. For example loads of people making bricks in India.
