Don’t Tread on My Idol
“Don’t tread on me,” is an essentially American saying, and in the face of fighting a tyrannical force, or defending ones home may actually be a good saying, but often it is an idolatrous saying. Augustine says we must love self or love God. Don’t tread on me naturally tips toward self love. There is almost certainly a justifiable case for Christians to defend that statement, “Don't tread on me.” But more often than not, it is steeped in the idolatry of self, that my liberty and rights are to be beloved above all else.
