In Feb of 1931, Earhart married her longtime beau, George Putnam. They had an unusual marriage for the day: She kept her surname and continued flying airplanes after marriage. (Women then were expected to give up their careers as soon as they got married, and live a demur lifestyle.) Just before the wedding, she gave Putnam a typed note explaining her philosophy of marriage, and what she wanted for their relationship in the future (pictured).
She disappeared while flying over the Pacific Ocean on July 2, 1937. She was 39 years old.
