Late at night, several students saw the Master learning to play the erhu (二胡) with much exertion. They asked why an old man such as he was devoting time to a skill he had never practiced before. The Master replied: “A scholar hoping to be a junzi is always learning. Xunzi taught that xin [heart] (心) must always be cultivated. When one masters an intellectual art, take up an aesthetic one. When one masters an aesthetic art, take up a physical one. This is how one achieves Harmony (和).”
