Despite the amazing flowering of nearly all the 33 apple varieties #ontheplot fruit set was poor and only 24 plants are carrying at least 1 fruit (before the June drop, that is). This could be due to a number of reasons among which: a. Not enough cold days in the winter (said by some to be necessary) b. It rained too much during flowering. The latter would seem to be consistent with the fact that pears - which flowered earlier, when it was sunnier - seem to be faring better. #horticulture #fruit
