Country music has an alcohol problem. There are songs that acknowledge this, but, like the people of Glasgow, they more often embrace drinking beer or whisky as part of everything, and think being drunk is not only essential but funny. I can see how the performers end up part of it because when they start out they are playing bars, they are up late, and it's bar people that are their audience. Possibly less so with online streaming and social media as a means to get yourself heard, but still go to concerts with a beer splashing out of a solo cup seems to be the default fan.

And I love the music. Sometimes I love the lyrics, but often I just wince a bit, because I'm a teetotal Glaswegian. I know the harm alcohol does, and while I'm not for banning it (banning substances doesn't help) I really don't like the glorifying of it. Even when a performer has to stop drinking because it's ruined them, they can't say that without losing their sudsed up fans.

Weep for me, for I am conflicted.
