Women get their sexual marketplace value up front. Men get theirs over time. So when women are young they chase older guys and men will hook up with older women because they are available. They tend not to marry the older women though.
While the practice isn’t popular in the modern west this is why arranged marriages were common in many cultures. It was a way to counter this. I’m not saying it’s perfect by any means…nothing is. But it does attempt to address the issue.
