“The problem is religion”
I find this a particularly irritating, and ignorant, talking point when it comes to the Middle East.
Is religion being used to whip people up, by powerful people who benefit? Yes. Are religious zealots a problem? Absolutely.
But to assume it wouldn’t occur if it wasn’t for religion ignores a ton of history. Both in Israel/Palestine and elsewhere.
Land, power, resources. Those are the motivators. Religion is the flag of convenience.
