My experiment with Linux on my old MacBook Air has come to an end. It was pretty easy to install the OS (Ubuntu) and I was able to get a few audio things installed like SuperCollider and PureData.
But, most everything I installed had issues to get it up and running and working properly. I had to dive pretty deep with troubleshooting on basically everything and none of the audio tools I installed could make any sound.
I want this old machine to be a hobby tool of sorts to tinker on projects, but the process of learning the new tools is enough for me that I don’t want to add in so much extra work. If I can’t add this machine into my music making work relatively soon I’m not sure I will stick with it to be honest.
So, for now I have installed the most recent version of macOS it can run (Big Sur) and I’ve already got things installed and I have confirmed they all work. It will be a much more useful tool to me if I have this environment set up.
