Social media is not the problem. Having lots of people directly influenced by a few is the problem. Corporate social media but also corporate mass media. People are misled (and willing to mislead) for money. This is where it all breaks down.
Humans are generally awesome. When the bad incentives are not overwhelming, we don't lie. We care what's true. We care about others. We think critically. This actually will make decentralized social media the solution for the centralized power of today.
