Played hockey from age 11 to 26.
Ive seen cuts caused by the player falling, causing their skate to rise up while trying to balance or while going down. There are plenty of injuries caused by this you can find on youtube, and it's very easy to see that they were accidental. (Sednick, Malarchuk)
With it being the left leg, this looks very intentional. Maybe he wasnt aiming for the throat, but there is no doubt at all that he was trying to kick his body.
