Religion i.e spiritual belief systems are cultural universals. Afaik all societies have religious belief systems. And all complex societies have religious institutions. To me this is prima facie evidence that belief systems and religious institutions have some serious adaptive value and serve some very important social functions, even if it isn't always clear what those are.
