We got reliant on them to the point they started gatekeeping the entry level carrier jobs as a First Officer like they were captains - yes, just as you now need a doctorate’s just to get an entry level job, so too does the first-year new hire. He has to get his ATP as if he’s a captain, all thanks to that stupid 2009 law (caused by a woman).
This graph should look delicious to you. I wouldn’t even worry too much about automation eliminating you yet, no matter the advances they won’t be able to go pilot-free any time soon, even if you have to act as a babysitter. Besides, planes are so expensive they can’t just make new ones - most of our smaller, non-airline stuff is more than 25 years old, if not older. You can’t just retrofit a 1978 Beech Duchess with fully automated tesla autopilot.
