perhaps it's not moderation, per se, that's the source of any woes in this model. perhaps it's that the power-role that moderators seek is not (typically) defined to be very short-term, temporary and is pre-planned to rotate around among anyone interested in taking on the chores.
it would be interesting to observe the group dynamics if the moderators' roles were seen more as "hot potato" shared burden/service-roles -- yours now, but not for long.
if you choose go with this, why not have some fun with the role's time limits: say, "21 days" each? and then you'd need at least a few off-cycles before you can do it again...
