Demand has dropped significantly over the last decade and a half. Part of that is the continued contraction of British industry but a lot is down to energy saving technologies. More appliances use genuinely next to nothing in standby and the shift from incandescent to LED lighting (especially in street lighting) has saved shedloads. People have also learned the cost of power and don’t waste it to the extent they used to.
