I feel like in the UK, unless you are staying at the Ritz or something, hotels are invariably dingy, cramped, have torn carpets that are amateur-installed, and have literally zero sound-proofing. You can here literally everything that happens in any room, from inside your room.
Even budget *motels* in the United States function better. The customer expectations are kind of amazingly different.
