Are some genres taken more seriously than others? How does this make you feel?
Genres are marketing tools, nothing more, nothing less! They tell bookstore staff and librarians where to shelve the product so it's displayed with similar stuff, sorted alphabetically within category.
One of the good things about ebooks is that we can tag books multidimensionally, allowing much finer discoverability.
As for "are some genres taken more seriously?" Yes, but only by fools.
