Seems more of a protocol issue than just Damus. Most apps crap out around 1000 so you're already winning.
Having heard this many times I've started to follow less people but instead add them to specific lists. Such as wallets, merchants, friends, developers, bitcoin... whatever. I then filter the timeline by the lists starting with my friendstr list. In return I've unfollowed people which doesn't mean I don't want to see their content, I do that's why they're a list.
But even if someone is following less than 1000-2000 people they will most likely still miss content from the people they are following. Since most apps don't do a good job to REALLY fetch ALL content since a user has been last online. Let's say since they went to bed. You get up, you start scrolling and eventually you reach the point where your timeline jumps from - posted just now, 5 min ago, 1h ago - straight to 2 days, 26 days, 59393883 years ago.
