I suppose everyone say Mint because it's the easiest to install and very beginner friendly. I didn't like it (again, just opinion).
Yes Chromium is still a thing and it is a browser I use occasionally.
Most browsers are built on top of it, like almost all browsers except for the firefox derivatives
