Most people hate it because of the way that the chapters were structured and for the insane use of brown colors in comparison to Ayesha. I'm not a big fan of E&L but I really like the characters in that game. It didn't sell poorly, it sold about the same as the other games in the franchise (before Ryza), it just didn't perform better even after all that marketing, that's the issue, they obviously spent a lot of money on marketing.
