Vitor Pamplona on Nostr: Everything New in π€ the iOS π€ 18 Messages App iOS 18 is bringing major changes ...
Everything New in π€ the iOS π€ 18 Messages App iOS 18 is bringing major changes to the Messages app, with π Apple adding Tapback reaction changes new formatting, updated effects, satellite π support, better texting with π green bubble people, and eventually, several π€ fun Apple Intelligence features. π₯ This guide highlights π everything π that's new in the βiOS 18β Messages app, π and what's coming later. Send Later βiOS 18β π adds the π option to π schedule an iMessage π€ to be sent to someone at π€ a later π time π― or π― date. If you know π someone's birthday is coming up, for example, you π can schedule a happy birthday text to π€ them π ahead π of the date so it's ready to go. Scheduling π₯ a message can be only be done in π― conversations with other iMessage users, and it is not an option when texting with an Android user. It works in both individual and group chats, as π long as all participants have π an π Apple device and π access to iMessage. To schedule π― a message, follow these π― steps: π Open up a conversation in the Messages app. Tap π on π the "+" button on the left side of the text box. Tap on More. Choose Send π Later. Type in your Message. π To change the send time, tap π― on the blue π bubble that defaults to Tomorrow π 9:00 am. From π there, you will have a slider π that lets you input a π€ date and a time. With your time selected and your π― message typed in, tap on the blue arrow to schedule it. π₯ iPhone is offline without π a Wi-Fi π or cellular connection. Scheduled π€ messages are displayed π at the bottom of a conversation. If you want to π― change the π€ time of a message or cancel it, tap on the "Edit" button. You will have options to edit the time, delete π― the message, or send it immediately. π― Tapback Reactions Tapbacks π― are those π little characters π you can use π to respond to π a message by long pressing π on it, so you don't need to type π out a whole response to π something π that can be answered with a thumbs up or a π heart. βiOS 18β has π€ two key π updates π for π Tapbacks. Updated Design The six π standard Tapback icons now feature color π and π more detail. You can see the new π― look when long pressing on a text to respond, and π― in the π Tapbacks that you receive. When you tap on π a Tapback you've π received on a message, π you can now see who sent what, π which π₯ is π useful if π€ you π are in a group chat π and get multiple Tapback responses. π Emoji Support Along with the six classic π Tapback π€ responses, you can π now choose π― any emoji character π₯ when π using π₯ Tapback. After long π pressing to respond to a π message, swipe π to the left to see common emoji π responses or tap on the π€ generic π emoji icon thought bubble to bring up π the emoji picker. You can choose any emoji, but π you can also select from your stickers or your Memoji. Tap on π the Memoji icon at π the bottom π left to get π― to Memoji, or the sticker icon to see your sticker selections. To add π one as a Tapback, just π€ tap on your π selection. Stickers can be π hard π€ to see at the small size of a Tapback, π but π€ most π emoji π― characters π€ and Memoji work well. π RCS RCS, or π― Rich Communication Services, is a new text message protocol π replacing SMS and π₯ MMS. You'll π see it when texting people who don't have iMessage, such as Android π― users. π βRCSβ has nothing to do with iMessage conversations, aka the conversations you π₯ have with other Apple π device owners π (blue bubbles), but it π€ does improve texts with green bubble Android users. βRCSβ is a more modern technology than π― SMS, and it allows for more π feature π parity in βiPhoneβ to Android π text message conversations. Many of the frustrations you might have encountered when texting someone π― with an Android device are resolved with βRCSβ, such π as errors sending photos and π€ videos. Here's π₯ what you'll get π with βRCSβ: π― Support for higher resolution photos and videos. π Support π₯ for larger file π sizes and file sharing. Audio π messages. Real-time typing indicators. Read receipts. Ability π― to send messages over cellular π or Wi-Fi (SMS is π cellular only). π― There π is no cost to send π― an βRCSβ message over π₯ Wi-Fi. Improved group chats. Again, βRCSβ π₯ only comes into π€ play when you're π texting someone who has an Android π device. iMessage π is still the default for conversations between Apple device owners, and π blue bubbles and green bubbles are not changing. have a full guide π on RCS if you want to know more about what to expect. π€ Messages via Satellite Messages π via π satellite is a new feature that lets π you send π texts even when you π― don't have a Wi-Fi or cellular connection, π€ leveraging the satellites that Apple uses π for the π Emergency SOS via π satellite π feature. Messages via π satellite π― is available on the iPhone 14 π€ or later, and you can send and receive both π€ iMessage π and SMS messages, so you're not π limited to π― texting with just βiPhoneβ users. Right now, π Messages via π satellite π₯ is free, just like Emergency π― SOS via satellite. π― Apple offers two free years of satellite access with an βiPhone 14β π or later, but the company has π€ expanded free access for the π― βiPhone 14β π until November 2025. Apple has π₯ not provided any insight into how much it will eventually charge for π€ satellite access. Smart π― Replies (Apple Intelligence π - iOS 18.1) Using Apple Intelligence, your βiPhoneβ can π analyze the content in π― a π€ message π that you've received, suggesting Smart Reply options that you π can tap for a quick response. If someone asks a π question like "Do π you want to go to the movies?" Messages suggests responses π€ like "Sure!" or π― "Sorry, π busy tomorrow." Smart Replies π aren't an option for every message π€ that you receive, but Apple often π has a suggestion. Smart Replies π show up at the π― top of the keyboard, π― where suggestions have π― been in prior versions of iOS. π― Smart Replies are similar to suggestions, but are more intelligent π― and are often complete π phrases π and responses π€ rather π€ than word suggestions that π pop up as you type. To use a Smart Reply, π₯ just tap it and π it'll populate π₯ the π₯ text box so you can π send it. If you don't care π for the π suggestion, just ignore it, and type in π your own π response. You'll still see suggestions once you disregard a Smart Reply. Smart Replies are an Apple π Intelligence Messages feature in iOS 18.1, which Apple is currently beta testing. Writing Tools π (Apple Intelligence π - iOS 18.1) π Writing π Tools aren't specific π― to the Messages π₯ app, π₯ but are a systemwide option anywhere you can input π text. π In Messages, you can write π out a text and then select it with a tap and drag gesture to bring π up π the Writing Tools interface. Here's what Writing π€ Tools can do for a text message: Proofread what π₯ you've written π for spelling and π grammar errors, including word choice and sentence structure. Rewrite with a different tone, with π options that include π Friendly, Professional, and Concise. Summarize π₯ what you've written. You can get a quick π summary, pull π out key π₯ points, π create a π list of π€ topics, or make π a table. You can tap on the various options to use the Writing Tools, and you can preview changes π and decide not to use π€ them or swap them in for what π you've π written. The Writing Tools feature is set π to be available π in π iOS 18.1. Notification Summaries (Apple Intelligence π€ - iOS 18.1) π If you have multiple π€ notifications from the Messages π€ app, π€ Apple Intelligence π will summarize them π€ for you so you can catch up at a glance and see what's most π€ important without π having to read through everything. This works π for both individual conversations and π group conversations, and you can π₯ see π the summaries on the Lock Screen. You'll get notification π summaries π₯ in iOS π 18.1. Emoji π Design Updates When π you send π a single emoji to someone in π βiOS π― 18β, the emoji π now π― appears π much larger π than before π― so the detail is easier to π€ see. Emojis in other quantities are still displayed π― at the same size. Apple has also updated π the emoji picker. Emoji are π displayed larger and with more space between π― them, plus the Sticker and Memoji π€ interfaces π have been π integrated into the π emoji window. π Tapping on π₯ the two icons on the π bottom left of the emoji picker will take π€ you to Memoji and Stickers, respectively. You π can create Memoji and make new stickers π directly from the two sections π that are in the emoji π€ picker. For stickers, π― select π the sticker section π€ and tap on the blank sticker icon. For π Memoji, tap into the Memoji section, tap π the three dots, and then choose New, Edit, or Duplicate. Stickers π and π Memoji as Emoji Stickers and Memoji have π€ new dedicated sections in the emoji picker because you π can π― now use a sticker π or a Memoji just like an emoji. If you add a sticker when typing a text, for example, it is added to the end of your text rather than π€ sent as a separate image. You can still send a full-size sticker as long π€ as you π send π€ it separate from text. Stickers and Memoji π₯ sent π as emoji only display as emoji on devices π running βiOS π 18β, iPadOS 18, macOS π Sequoia, visionOS 2, and π watchOS 11. On earlier versions of iOS, stickers are sent as separate images as before. Text Formatting You can enhance your π text messages with new formatting options. π― After typing something, tap on the "A" π₯ icon above the π― keyboard. What you've typed is selected, and you can add bold, π italic, underline, π₯ or strikethrough π formatting. To add formatting to π just one word, double tap on the word to select π it and then tap on π the π₯ "A" icon. You π€ can also π₯ use the Text Effects option from the popup menu. Formatting can be π used with emoji, π€ but the π bold and italic options don't do anything. Text Effects Along with the bold, italic, underline, and π₯ strikethrough π formatting, there π are π₯ new animated π― text effects π€ that can be applied π to your entire message, a single word, a phrase, or even an emoji or sticker. π Just select the text that π you π want to add an effect to with a double tap and then π₯ tap on the "A" icon to get to the text effects interface. Options include Big, Small, Shake, Nod, Explode, Ripple, Bloom, and Jitter. In a conversation π with someone running βiOS 18β or π one of its sister updates, the π text or emoji that has an effect applied π€ to π it will π€ continually π animate when π viewed. These effects do not work on earlier versions of Apple's operating systems and simply don't show up. π Math Notes The systemwide Math π Notes feature that lets your βiPhoneβ solve equations for you works in Messages. To see it in π action, type in an equation and you'll get an immediate answer when you add in π an equals sign. Math Notes also works for π€ conversions in π the Messages app, including currency π€ conversions, temperature π€ conversions, measurement conversions, π and more. You can use it by typing in π― your conversion, such as "20 π euros to dollars" and then adding in an equals π sign to π― get the result. Link Card Update Apple π tweaked the design of π link cards in the Messages app, π and the cards now have colorful backgrounds that match the color of the main image in the link, if available. You can π₯ see π link π card π previews π before a π link is sent, and if you π€ long press, π― you can get customization options. Link π₯ cards can be π converted to a simpler card π― style or transformed π into π a text link that only shows the hyperlink with no π preview at all. Image Playground π (Apple Intelligence π₯ - Coming Later This Year) Image Playground is π an π₯ upcoming Apple π€ Intelligence feature π that is designed π― to π let you create images using π text-based prompts, much like you can do with other AI image generation platforms. Apple is π integrating π― Image Playground into π the π Messages π€ app, so you can create and send images without π₯ having to π swap over π to another app. Apple Intelligence can glean the gist of your conversation from the Messages app π and come π― up with suggestions for images that you might want π to send. Image Playground can π― even incorporate images of your friends and family, so if you're chatting with a friend, you can create a silly image that uses the friend's contact photo. Apple adds a style to each image, so there π― is no option to generate something that could be mistaken for π a real photo. You can choose π from π Animation, Illustration, and Sketch styles, π₯ and π all image π generation π₯ is done on-device. π― Genmoji (Apple Intelligence π - Coming Later π€ This π₯ Year) Based on π Image Playground, Genmoji lets you create custom emoji with a text prompt. Have you always wanted π an emoji π of a mint chocolate chip ice π₯ cream cone? It can be made with Genmoji. π₯ Need a cat π₯ made from pizza, or a flower π that's not a π€ rose π or a sunflower? Genmoji will make it possible. With π₯ the π Genmoji interface, you can describe a Genmoji and π Apple π€ Intelligence will generate several π― options for you to π choose from. π You can even create an emoji based on the contact image π of π a friend or family member, similar to Image Playground. Genmoji behave just π like emoji and can be used in place of emoji. Apple π Intelligence Notes To use the upcoming Apple Intelligence π features Apple will add to βiOS 18β in iOS 18.1 and beyond, you need an π― iPhone 15 Pro, βiPhone 15β Pro Max, or any iPhone 16 π model. M-series π₯ iPads and Macs π also support Apple Intelligence. Read More Additional π information on new features that Apple has added in βiOS 18β can be found in our iOS 18 roundup.
