It's probably because until relatively recently, left-handed people were considered evil, and murdered before they could reproduce. Artificial selection made the gene more rare. I'm not sure if that's actually the reason, but it makes sense to my monkey brain.
This article has a more scientific explanation, and ylu should probably rely on it instead of my speculation.
