556 years ago today, the Lord Mayor of London led an armed retinue to the Hanseatic _Kontor_ in London, the settlement of German merchants known as the Steelyard. All the merchants were arrested and imprisoned in Ludgate, and the Kontor was closed. For the next six years, England was at war with cities of the Hanseatic League, as well as with Denmark and Norway.
