I'll give you she didn't try to hard with her apperance but i would say besides the russian nobody knew emma, nobody really saw her working hard, nobody spoke to her much to determine she was honest and many other women were sober. Most if not all of the men besides the russian guy looked at how she looked and decided "shes the one". This is demenstrated by how in the story her main love interest didn't know a thing about her, tried to buy her affection with expensive gifts, didn't understand her feelings or care to dive into her past at all. He merely had a fantasy of what being with her would be like and got caught up in it and blinded by love.
Another example is the prince, what quailties made him fall in love wih her? He barely knew anything, it was just "love at first sight" like with most likely every suiter that came before. Also if shes the best girl in the show that was intentional like with Chinubyou sense making the other girls qual matches would make people question if emma really deserved the happy end.
In terms of Brides Stories the only reason i really got into this at all was because it got an english dub through a kickstarter campaign honestly. I already have a backlog of many types of media i think its kinda a very simple statement that i won't be getting to that series possibly ever.
