I told my grandkids about it today. I told them how we'd get some old trousers and an old shirt and stuff them with newspaper so it looked like a body. I described how we'd get an old sock or, better still, a stocking and stuff that with newspaper to make the head. We'd paint a face on him and try to find a hat. Then we'd put our "Guy" (Guido to his Spanish mates) in a pram and take him into town where we'd ask passers by for "a penny for the Guy". What money we collected went towards the purchase of fireworks. After dark we'd tie Guy to a stake in the backyard, build a bonfire around him and set the fireworks off as he burned.
The Grandkids looked a little shocked and asked "Were backyard fireworks legal in the old days Grandad"?
