Indie presses vary widely, and what you need is going to depend somewhat on your genre and the kind of reach you're looking for. In general you're looking for a press that can do more for you than you can do for yourself (via self-pub). That's going to be a little different for everyone.
I recommend both Writer Beware and Absolute Write as places to research small presses, to weed out those that won't help you much. (If you join AW, you can ask questions of a great many experienced and incredibly chatty people, like myself. 🙂)
