We did have a dual scan one that can treat each cat differently in both directions but it was not satisfactory, due to many firmware issues. The single direction scanning variant is actually excellent, I don't use that word lightly, and I suspect could be tweaked to log detection of cats, though perhaps not direction as it has no sensor to determine which way the door opens. You'd have to do the RFID pulse decoding on your add-on MCU board, but the pulses are accessible.
