Yes, I run a Discord. You might not like it, but here are a couple of incontrovertible facts about Discord:
It has, without question, the most robust moderation and administration apparatus of any community-based communication tool. Discourse might do well as well, but oh my god what a hassle to set up.
I have a Discord because the community asked for one. You meet people where they are, not try to shove whatever ideology you have down their throats.
There is no reasonable open source alternative. Don't even with Matrix. I run a Matrix server, and on top of the administrative nightmare, the first time I saw a public room get repeatedly spammed with CSAM, with seemingly no recourse for the members and additional labor to remove the cached images from their own servers, I knew it was a nonstarter for a large community.
If you think "real" infosec conversations aren't happening on Discord, lmao
