I've followed this case and the accusations against REI were totally unfair and the whole thing went out of proportion. For several months REI staff were not allowed to meet with GOJ ministries. It was not until a special investigation by the Cabinet Office found that they didn't have any inappropriate ties with China that such talks could be held again.
They made a mistake but what followed was a mean smear campaign. One can speculate over what interests were behind that.
