It does seem to me that European nations and institutions should have a clearer example, after the truck blockades of Ukraine, of how it would be of political benefit to "stop Russia at the borders". No more Russian gas, no more Russian imports flowing cross country into Slovakia, Austria, Hungary, Serbia, Bulgaria, etc.
Russian trade fuels Russian nationalism in Europe, which fuels Russian political influence operations against European democracies.
