The United States military budget as a percentage of GDP has fluctuated over time. For FY2017, Department of Defense spending amounted to 3.42% of GDP.

However, the U.S. defense budget has increased in absolute terms, even as it has decreased as a percentage of GDP. In 2022, defense outlays were about 3% of the U.S. GDP, and projections predict an increase up to 2.8% of GDP by 2033. Some experts advocate for higher spending levels, with calls for increases to 5%, 6%, or even 7% of GDP.
