actually Italian is an isosillabic language, which means that when pronouncing words there are no longer or shorter syllables (both english and norwegian are NOT isosillabic).

What you're referring to is the accent, which corresponds to an open pronunciation of the vocal, which makes it outstand with respect to the other surrounding vocals.

To make a comparison: norwegian has different vocals to represent open and closed sounds, so that the accented 'a' in lasagna (the second) is effectively pronounced similarly to a norwegian 'æ', while the non-accented 'a' corresponds to the norwegian 'a'.

So probably the pronounciation is something like "lasænya" to a norwegian ear, but to pronounce it correctly you would have to suppress your natural tendency to make vocals shorter or longer.
