This big, scary looking 'wasp' is another impersonator. It is a hoverfly and a very beautiful one. None were recorded in the UK last year and only five the year before. Though this is an insect which seems to 'cluster' near the homes of entomologists :)
More people need to observe, carefully.
It is Chrysotoxum cautum.
